Select Presents The RSS Challenge 2014

Royal Statistical SocietySelect are pleased to be sponsoring the RSS Statistical Analytics Challenge 2014 set by the Young Statisticians Section and Research Section of the Royal Statistical Society. Over the next six weeks, teams of analysts from across the country will be testing their analytic skills, teamwork and creativity with the aim of being named the 2014 RSS Challenge Winners!

The brief, unveiled on the 6th May, is an open-ended research question that relates to a large and complex data set. This year, the challenge involves analysing brain imaging data from MRI scans. Due to its complex structure and the huge amounts of data that MRI studies amass, statistics plays a crucial role in identifying key insights from these data sets. Whilst there have been a lot of advances in this area of research, there are still many challenges remaining and we hope the teams involved in the challenge will produce some fascinating new insights into these data.

The RSS judges will choose the top three teams from the challenge who will be invited to present their results in a special session at the RSS Annual Conference in September, with day-registration fees for the winning team members covered as part of the award. Not only that, but all entries in the competition will be given detailed feedback from an experienced RSS statistician and some submissions may be considered for publication in the Society’s prestigious journal.
