Job Description

This is an exciting role for someone with a strong mix of statistical and programming skills. The successful applicant will join our expanding statistical consultancy team as well as having special responsibility for the development of software tools and systems for use both by our clients and our in-house staff. Whilst all of our consultants are able to produce appropriate code, this new position represents a significant investment in order to enhance our ability to provide software-related services to our clients and reflects the importance that we place on growing this aspect of our business.

The post-holder will be responsible for all significant software-development projects within the organisation. This will include statistical tools for use by our clients  (using e.g., VBA, C#, PHP or Java) as well as operational tools for our own internal use including, for example, our project management system (PHP, Javascript, MySQL), automated analysis and reporting tools (e.g., odfWeave) and Shiny apps (R, HTML). The post-holder will work closely with members of the consultancy team, the statistical services manager and, of course, our clients and will be expected to take a pro-active approach to software development by anticipating future needs and identifying services or areas of the business that would benefit from new tools.

The post-holder will be an active member of our consultancy team spending about half of their time undertaking statistical consultancy work in order to develop, broaden and maintain their statistical knowledge and practical expertise.  Together, the consultancy team is responsible for delivering a whole range of statistical services to a wide range of public, private and third sector organisations. Recent projects include real-time filtering of financial time series, national survey design and analysis, predictive modelling of UK property characteristics from messy and incomplete data, modelling customer behaviour and predicting future retail sales, testing the effectiveness of veterinary treatments and surgical procedures, and modelling the habitats and population dynamics of the UK’s great crested newt population. No two projects are the same and the successful applicant will need to be able to quickly understand the statistical challenge that each project poses and to match that against the skills within the consultancy team to ensure that we provide the best solution for our client.

The role would suit a highly enthusiastic and creative individual with a strong statistical background but a passion for programming. We are looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a team and finding creative solutions to practical problems. The successful applicant will be able to quickly learn new programming languages and be able to see opportunities to make use of their skills to support and enhance the team and to produce and deliver exciting and valuable new services for our clients.

This is a very exciting role within a very dynamic and ambitious organisation. The post-holder will be encouraged to help shape the company as it grows and will become an integral part of who we are and what we become.
