Exeter Early-Career Stats Showcase

exeter-early-career-stats-showcase-275x192 On the evening of Wednesday 11th February 2015, the Exeter Initiative for Statistics and its Applications (ExIStA) joined forces with the Young Statisticians Section (YSS) of the Royal Statistical Society to host a special Early-Career Stats Showcase at the University of Exeter Forum. The aim of the event was to showcase the work of career-young statisticians – or those using statistics in their everyday jobs – based in the South West. Select was extremely pleased to help support the showcase and sponsor the pre-event coffee and biscuits.

The evening began with a series of eight-minute talks from eight speakers whose professions spanned the statistical spectrum, giving a unique insight into the variety of different careers that are available and a flavour of the current challenges and future trends within each area. The eight speakers included early-career statisticians based at the Met Office, ATASS Sports, NHS, Q-Step, Select Statistics, The Learning Clinic, Sparx, and the University. Select’s very own Tom described what it’s like to work as a statistical consultant and contrasted this with his previous roles in academia and industrial research.

For more details on the event, including a summary of each of the talks, see the YSS review on their website here. Videos of the talks and Q&A from the event are now also available on the Select YouTube channel.

The showcase was a great success with over 70 attendees coming along to hear about the wide range of career paths undertaken by career-young statisticians in the South West. Select are looking forward to continuing to support ExIStA and we are in the process of organising further events for 2015.
